a week of recording my next album in Maine!

Hi there,
so sorry for the delay on my second post. I just wanted to say that i am SO excited to leave tomorrow to drive up to a cabin in Maine with my producer Saul…to make a beautiful 2nd album. The last few months has been full of anticipation and prep work. editing parts of songs, choosing from a long list of possible tracks, and conceptualizing what instrumentation will sound good on each piece. I want this to be a beautiful, cohesive collection of songs for myself but also for my listeners to really dive into. i’m putting all my sweat and tears into this project and you’ll be able to hear that in the final product :)

i’m also excited that I’ve been nominated by GO Magazine for some Nightlife Awards. I’m going to the Pride Kick off Party tonight to party and find out WHAT category I’m nominated for but I assume it has something to do with music! haha

when I get back, I’ll be gearing up for my next big show at the Mercury Lounge – Friday July 8th! see you there!

Ducks in a Row

This is a scary moment. Scary in the best way possible, but scary nonetheless. For years, I wrote and wrote and wrote – original songs on guitar, melodies in my head, and endless lyrics – and on occasion…I would play my songs for a small audience. Friends, family, and strangers encouraged me, asked why I wasn’t trying to “really DO this” and pursue a life/career in music. And I kinda thought, “Hmmm, I dunno!” and during that period of my life I didn’t have the balls to start trying.

Maybe because trying equals the potential to fail OR maybe because trying equals the possibility of success. Resistance is a strong force in all of us. I think all real artists experience deep (and sometimes useful) self-doubt, but somewhere along the line I decided I wasn’t helping anyone by withholding my music from the world. So over the past few years, I’ve pushed myself out on the limbs of my art and found that it can support me. There are also some AMAZING people very close to me who have invested their invaluable time, energy, and unconditional support to help get my music out there and to extinguish the self-doubt when it rears its head. I’ve worked hard to make things happen for myself, and I’ve found that what you put out in the world really does come back to you. So, THANK YOU – to all the friends and fans of my music, it means the world to me :)

And the momentum has been great! I was booked to open for the iconic lesbian songwriter Melissa Ferrick on April 1st @ New Jersey’s Mexicali Live – a show that I’m SO excited for.  I have a ton of other shows lined up for the Spring including college gigs @ Bard, Wesleyan, Muhlenberg, and more to come. I was just interviewed about my career as a musician for 2 awesome Brooklyn art projects. I’m JUST about to launch this website (crafted by the unstoppable Nate Laffan) after I finish typing! eek! and you can find me on Twitter and Facebook of course. And lastly but most importantly – over the next few months, I’ll be working with Ethan Schmid (drums, banjo, electric) and producer Saul MacWilliams to develop the sound of my songs and record a beautiful and cohesive sophomore album. We’re a romantic group and intend to hopefully record the album in a quiet cabin in the middle of the woods.

And so…I’ve begun to get all my ducks in a row.

More soon :) xoxo. J
